Advice · April 7, 2020

At ONA Marine our spar buoy designs are underpinned by the most robust in-house dynamic analysis. The analysis is integral with the design process and ensures our designs remain conservative, yet meet our client’s specific technical requirements which may include consideration of hull accelerations, dynamic line affects and green water slamming.

In the case of spar buoys, which are designed to minimize vertical and angular motions, there is a delicate balance between low hull resistance balanced with the need to have adequate stability to allow boarding and maintenance in less dynamic conditions.

Therefore, detailed dynamic analysis is essential and most cover the various design drafts and all event load cases. In Australia that means also modelling the cyclonic events which must be endured.

In some of our gravity base clump weight designs the analysis has allowed us to demonstrate, through simulation in time domain, the loading and tipping effects on the anchoring system such that adequate factored capacity can be incorporated into the anchor foundation design. Such loads also form the basis to ensure steel gravity base structures, incorporating clumped weights, have adequate inherent strength to remain intact throughout their design life.

The associated simulation shows a small navigational spar buoy in various sea states as modelled in Orcina Orcaflex. For more information on our design, construct and install capabilities or our range of spar buoy options call us today.
